Storm Survival Kit Springtime and early summer are the seasons for windstorms, tornadoes and hail. Be prepared by putting together a power-outage and storm survival kit. Assemble your kit in a large canvas tote bag or a water-resistant storage container. Keep it an easily accessible place in the basement, in a closet or under a bed. The Kit Should contain:
Other items you should have available are a battery operated radio for news updates and instructions from the local authorities, a battery operated clock, prescription medications and pet supplies. And don't forget boredom-busters like books, a deck of cards and games. It can be a long wait till the power returns. -Akron Beacon Journal, Home Depot We also add bottle water and snack to our kit. Along with a weather radio, and blankets. Saving Money This year we are going to attempt to plant a garden. How do you know when is is safe to plant your garden? A way of determining a good date is actually basing it off the last frost day. This can be found at http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/freezefrost/frostfreemaps.html. Here is a direct link to a Planting map of the US Once you know the average last frost date, determine what kind of crop you want to plant: Cool Weather Crops - These tolerate cold fairly well, and can even take a frost in stride. This includes the kale crops (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, etc.) along with onions and garlic. Many types of lettuce and spinach fall into this category. If the ground’s not frozen and can be tilled it’s likely late enough for these go into the garden, but a good rule of thumb is as early as a month before the last frost date. Tender Crops - These don’t tolerate a frost, and need protection, but will grow in cooler temperatures and can be set out within a couple of weeks of the last frost date. Warm Weather Crops - These not only don’t tolerate a frost, but need warmer weather (often 70 degrees or more) to grow anyhow, so there’s not much advantage to trying to put them out early. Tomatoes, peppers, corn, okra, eggplant are examples of these.
The other night I was sitting at the kitchen table with my son-in-law whining about the cost of plants. I have always wanted the strawberry plant that you hang from your patio and it grows upside down. A friend of mine last year had 2 of these and she had fresh strawberries every morning all summer long. So Brian was on quest. And guess what he found! And it is made from a 2 liter pop bottle. Also works for tomato plants. I know what I will be doing soon!
